Wyoming K9 Training Academy is a professional dog board and train facility. Private lessons are available upon request.

Training Offered;

Obedience Training: We recognize two methods for obedience training, depending on the dog's temperament we may use one or the other, or a combination.

Our first method is clicker training. This training is about motivation and timing. It focuses on teaching your dog how to learn using positive reinforcement. Once your dog understands this concept they can be trained to do almost anything. The majority of our training is done on a board and train basis. Your personal needs and goals will determine the amount of time it will take to train your dog. On average it takes 4 to 7 weeks. In addition, we will assign a small amount of homework for the owner to complete. Upon Graduation of the course, we will spend approximately 2 hours familiarizing you with your dogs new and improved behavior.

Our second method of training is compulsion. This method is the most common and used by many trainers. Compulsion training uses both positive and negative reinforcement. In training, your dog will learn right from wrong using small corrections and timing. This is also a board and train program lasting 4 to 7 weeks. We will also assign a small amount of homework for the owner to complete. Upon completion of the program we will spend approximately one hour training you on your dogs new manners.

Search and Rescue:

Search and rescue is exciting for both the dog and owner. Search dogs are used in a wide range of situations. These include but are not limited to searching for lost hikers and climbers, those suffering with Alzheimer's or dementia, missing children, and possible victims of crimes. Wyoming K-9 Academy will train dogs in both mountain and urban settings confirming that they are comfortable working in both environments. We train the dogs to find missing people using a variety of methods such as scent, trailing, and tracking. These are very efficient methods of covering large areas quickly and do not always require clothing or personal effects from missing person. Search dogs can work in most conditions including the dark by using all of their senses to the fullest. Search and rescue dogs require an owner that is committed to working with them daily, both in and out of the field. Wyoming K-9 Academy will work with you and your dog ensuring you are ready to enter the field of search and rescue.

K-9 Law Enforcement

K-9 law enforcement is an intense training in which a dog will be trained in the ability to track suspects, or missing people. The dog will learn to detect narcotics such as, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamines and derivatives. Law enforcement K-9's will have a multitude of disciplines such as personnel, article, in and out buildings, vehicle, trailers and more. This specialized training is all positive reinforced and the dogs are active, energetic working dogs. Not all dogs have the necessary ability to search for narcotics and or people so I will take it upon myself to find the perfect dog for you and your agency and train to accommodate your training request. Most of the dogs are from rescues and shelters. After the training is
complete I require the handler to spend two weeks learning how to work the dog at the
facility.

Trailing or Tracking

Tracking can include a variety of things, from people to animals, narcotics, bed bugs, and even termites. I train the dog to find a scent and they will use there unbelievable noses and find what or who they are trained. Tracking dogs will typically work on lead and will mostly have their nose to the track following ground disturbance. A good tracking dog will be able to work through a variety of terrain as well as successfully maneuver turns and "double backs" that a subject might take. A trailing dog is scent specific, can also have his/her head up using some of the air scent techniques to find the subject. Trailing dogs will work on or off lead, and trailing dogs will venture off the actual path that a subject took should a scent pool be discovered. All dogs are capable of tracking and trailing, however the larger, sport, hound, working and herding breeds tend to be used more often simply for their adaptability in various terrains.

Arson

Arson dogs are trained to find accelerant, such as petroleum’s, acetone bases, naturals, alcohol, and paint removers. The dog will have the ability to tell you if an accelerant was present in a fire, and where it was to help narrow down the search area in arson investigations. This will help in finding valuable evidence, cut down sampling time and assist in fraudulent cases by finding minuet particles and compounds. The dog will have a passive response so not to disturb evidence. It is important to select the right dog for the job at the very onset. There are various breeds of dogs used for accelerant detection canines the Labrador is the most common, but other breeds such as the German shepherd and Weimaraner are also used. Breed of dog however is not as important as its nature, ability to learn and its willingness to work. The dogs’ character is carefully evaluated before it enters into training. Dogs that promise to be successful accelerant detection canines are those that make few mistakes while learning a new problem and which display a strong desire to perform a task. This high degree of motivation, willingness to complete a task, is essential in a detector dog and may be increased through an effective reward system. This reward system may incorporate food rewards or “play time” with the handler.
