Academic Canine Solutions

Over twenty years ago, I began studying canine behavior out of necessity. I had a dog that was turning two years old and was showing signs of aggression. The moment came when I realized that I was out of my league. Without warning, Kodi lunged at a kid riding by us on his bicycle. The professional trainer’s name that stood above all of the others was John Mathias Henkel. With a training practice that began in 1959, he was one of the original Master Trainers.

It was in working with Kodi under John’s instruction that I was introduced to this profession and where I found my passion. John taught me about Guiding and Shaping, the techniques and methods that go beyond obedience classes to ensure that a dog becomes a wonderful member of the family.

This inspired me to continue this course of study. I studied canine behavior in John’s apprentice program and became a professional trainer with the ability to solve the most common training problems owners often face, as well as, the most difficult and complex ones. I worked along side of John for years in his practice and was an instructor at his seminars and in his classes. Sadly, it all came to an abrupt end when he passed away in 2008.

This was a devastating loss because John had also become my husband and the love of my life. Circumstances beyond my control caused me to follow an unexpected path across the globe and back again and I would earn my degree from the Culinary Institute of America along the way. Through it all, I have always turned to my calling, helping owners to get the best from their dogs.

Now I have a wonderful business in Hyde Park, New York, where I serve the Hudson Valley, Western Massachusetts, and Connecticut. I am so excited to get up in the morning because I love what I do and I’m eager to solve the next canine challenge that comes my way.

I can’t wait to help you and your dog!
