Scent dog training by Dr. Carla Simon. Carla is a Nosework Judge, K9 Scent Work Trainer, and President of Sniff Alberta Scent Dog Training Club (Calgary, Alberta).

Carla has bred and trained hunting dogs for Hunter’s Heart Kennels since 1999, as featured in the Pointing Dog Journal, Dogs in Canada, Clean Run and American Brittany magazines. She is a sought-after speaker, who drew a sold-out crowd of more than 600 at UBC’s Chan Centre for the Performing Arts.

Carla’s scientific approach to reliable scent dog training helps handlers to gel with their canine partners, with unmistakable focus and proven results. She has inspired scent dog training students internationally. Hunter’s Heart students have captured titles from Novice SDDA and C-WAGS up to Elite UKC Nosework, and encompass dogs of all ages, sizes, temperaments and abilities.

Carla and her Brittany Spaniel, CH HuntersHeart RedDevil Fantome FDJ CGN AN SGDC SDS-SP TOG AN AE SI MC MV (Boo), have won Elite High in Trial and finished K9 ABC Games’ highest (Tripe Odor Games) title in one weekend. They both love helping other teams to discover the unabashed joy of scent work.

Nosework is a new and growing dogsport that uses scent dog training techniques similar to those employed to teach law enforcement dogs to detect narcotics and explosives, to teach pet dogs to search for legal substances in scent dog contests. Dogs who enjoy sniffing are easily trained using positive, rewards based training to love searching for scent. Scent dog training is a great way to share mental and physical exercise with your dog, increase confidence, stay active while recovering from health issues, build your relationship and have fun.
